The “Sand Sculpting” Event
Every year, Texas SandFest has an estimated attendance of 20,000 people. With competitions such as “Best of Show” and “People’s Choice” awards, Texas SandFest celebrates the art of sand sculpting and offers cash prizes for the winners. Besides the competitions, the festival offers sand sculpting workshops and demonstrations to help educate people of all ages about sand artistry.
Live music, food, kid-friendly activities, and shopping for art and crafts are just a few of the enjoyable activities that take place during the festival as well. The festival places a strong emphasis on charitable causes. The proceeds of the festival are donated to a variety of charitable organizations that help those in need within the community as well as organizations that strive to protect and preserve the natural resources of the local environment.
History of Texas Sandfest
Under Sharon Schafer’s direction, the Art Center for the Islands (now the Port Aransas Art Center) organized the first Texas SandFest in 1997. It began as a modest neighborhood contest where sand sculptors could show off their abilities. The event was held in Port Aransas over a weekend in April each year. The Texas SandFest’s administrative center, the Port Aransas Community Theater (PACT), was then established. The event would be thought of as a theater fundraiser, with PACT receiving all funds on an annual basis.
Thousands of people visited the island thanks to the event. For eateries, retailers, and small-town business owners, this has opened up additional business opportunities. In 2006, a request was made to allow the festival to operate independently as a nonprofit organization. PACT spent several years raising money before finally constructing the new theater. The neighborhood was eager to give the theater company more money. An event that could generate revenue for additional local nonprofit organizations drew a greater response from the public. When Texas SandFest applied for and was granted its 501(c) 3 nonprofit status, it became a nonprofit organization. It started operating under the direction of a chosen board of directors.
Numerous people attend the festival, which has benefited the neighborhood. Any activity that is held during the event is open to all participants.
